On January 2nd. I underwent a nose surgery I had delayed for 15 years.
Little did I know. It would lead to 9 harrowing days in the hospital. And teach me 3 life-changing lessons.
The surgery itself went smoothly. But I was rushed back just a couple days later. When I woke up choking on my own blood.
The emergency doctor had to remove splints. Detect severe nasal bleeding.
And to stop the bleeding. The doc inserted emergency tampons deep into my nasal cavity. A traumatic experience from childhood I hoped to never repeat.
The pain was massive. The tampons made it nearly impossible. To breathe, eat, sleep, hear, or taste.
I remember wishing I could just be put under anesthesia again. For relief from the pain and discomfort.
Those 9 days tested me both physically and mentally. But they also gave me clarity on what matters most.
Lesson 1: ↳ Health is wealth. ↳ Don’t take health for granted. ↳ Even when you feel great, make self-care a priority.
Lesson 2: ↳ Medical staff are the real heroes. ↳ They endure immense stress and challenges for the sake of others. ↳ I have deep gratitude for every doctor, nurse and hospital staff member who helped me. ↳ More broadly, I’m thankful for all healthcare workers around the world who save lives and care for others daily. ↳ Their vital work often goes unseen.
Lesson 3: ↳ Strive to excel in your niche. ↳ My doctor’s specialized expertise was crucial for treating me. ↳ While it’s tempting to be everywhere, true mastery requires focus. ↳ I aim to become deeply skilled in one niche where I can provide the most value to others.
I’m now exiting recovery mode. Slowly rebuilding my health to fully engage with year 2024.
While intensely personal. I hope my story spreads awareness on valuing health & life.
If we look closely. There are lessons to be found even in our darkest hours. With focus and perseverance. We can emerge stronger from adversity.
What challenges have you faced that reshaped your perspective?
